Whirlpools are like a tornado in the bodies of water. They’re potentially dangerous for people, animals, and ships that get too close.

How whirlpools form has to do with currents, which describe the movement of water from one location to another. They can form in rivers and are very common at the bottom of waterfalls. When two or more currents of different directions meet, their waters begin to swirl around each other. If they’re strong enough, they may start to spiral downward. This process forms a vortex, the space in the center of a whirlpool. It has the power to pull objects into it. People should always stay vigilant when swimming in natural bodies of water. Vortexes can be very dangerous and can cause drowning.

Despite the danger, whirlpools are a fascinating natural phenomenon. Many people enjoy watching strong maelstroms spin away from the safety of dry land.
