When whales jump into the air, or as called breaching, it is quite an attraction to behold! Whales are the largest animals to have ever existed now on Earth. They can weigh up to 190 tons and stretch nearly 30 meters. The size is enormous but why do they breach? Aren’t they super heavy? Experts aren’t quite sure. Breaching doesn’t seem to have any apparent purpose. However, they have a few assumptions for why this colossal animal loves to leap from the ocean into the air.
Whales may breach to clear their skin of parasites and other small animals. Some experts think breaching is whales’ way of doing the same thing as humans repelling mosquitoes off the arms. Another hypothesis is that whales breach to communicate with each other. It is known that whales sing to each other beneath the water. Whale songs are often long and complicated, and they can travel pretty far underwater. However, in rough seas, songs don’t go as far. Breaching is much louder, so some experts believe whales may breach to call out to each other when the water is rough.
