Lavender is a hardy perennial in the Lamiaciae, or mint, family. It is a shrubby plant indigenous to the mountainous regions of the countries bordering the western half of the Mediterranean, and cultivated extensively for its aromatic flowers in various parts of France, in Italy and in England and even as far north as Norway. It is also now being grown as a perfume plant in Australia.

Lavender plants are small, branching and spreading shrubs with grey-green leaves and long flowering shoots. The leaves can be simple or pinnate measuring 30–50 mm (1–2 in) in length. The plant produces flowers on shoots or spikes which can be 20–40 cm (8–16 in) long. The flowers are lilac or blue. Lavender can grow to 0.4 m (1.3 ft) in height and live for 20–30 years. 

Lavender plants require bright sunlight for adequate growth and should be positioned accordingly. The plants will grow best in light of sandy, well-draining soils with a pH of 5.8–8.3. The plants are drought tolerant once established but require regular watering while they establish.

Lavender flowers can be used in cooking as a herb. Fresh flowers are used as a flavoring in desserts and sauces. Besides, this plant is also cultivated for the extraction of essential oil from the fresh flowers of the lavender plant. The essential oil has some great benefits therefore many people use it for some purposes.
