The killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) is a large plover found in America. The killdeer's name comes from its call that resembles "kill deer". Its upperparts are mostly brown. The head has patches of white and black. There are two black bands on its breast. The belly and the rest of the breast are white.

The killdeer's nest is a scrape lined with vegetation and white material, such as pebbles or seashell fragments. The killdeer lures away intruders from the nesting area by faking to have a "broken wing". It limps or flutters on the ground as if it is injured.

The breeding season occurs from mid-March to August. It lays four to six yellowish eggs with dark markings. Both parents incubate the eggs for 22 to 28 days. The chicks feed themselves after hatching with the parents accompanying them. The killdeer's diet consists mainly of insects, although they also eat other invertebrates and seeds.
