For the day, they dress in red. Red is believed to bring good luck and drive the bad spirits away. They also decorate their homes and temples in that color. If it rains during Imlek New Year, then the year would be prosperous.
Families gather in Imlek New Year and feast on various foods. The most popular one is Chinese New Year's cake or nian gao, which is made from glutinous rice flour. Chinese-Indonesians also eat oranges and milkfishes during this day which are also said to bring blessings and good luck for the year ahead. Also, during these family gatherings, children and unmarried members of the family will get some amount of money or angpao from the elders and married members of the family.
